Elements of Art

My element for this project was color.  I chose paint and people as my mediums because people relate emotions to colors and people themselves show color in what they do.  I chose this subject because I love exploring how people react with art through color and self expression, for example, dance.

Is Art Without Meaning Decoration?

I think that art without meaning can be simply categorized as decoration.  I've formed this opinion by viewing the art of other artists and everyday people and asking questions as to why they made what they did and how they connect to it because I find it very rare that someone had no meaning or purpose as to why they began creating their work or that they have no reasoning as to why they created what they did.  Without any reason or whim, art is a series of lines and colors that may be pleasing to the eye but hold no special place in heart or mind and therefore seem to me, pointless.

Essential Question: Meraki

My question for this project is "What would it look like to live a meraki life?".  Meraki is a greek word that means to live passionately and put part of yourself into everything you do.  I decided to demonstrate that idea by creating a clay figure to set in an inverted disco ball, to explain easily.  When looking into the top opening, the veiwer can see the figure from nearly every angle and can see pieces of it in every mirror surrounding them.

Reaction

For my reaction project I wanted to work with the medium of photography.  I enjoyed learning the basics of photoshop and I am proud of how it turned out.  If I were to do this project again, I woud focus more on body language and facial expressions.

Texture and Juxstaposition
Teens Inspired

The sculpture (above) connected with me immediateley.  I was drawn in by the little details and how you can sense a feeling based off of something as two right hands.  I was also intrigued by the sheer size and raw material that the sculpture was made of.

The sculpture below at first only captured my attention because of the life-size gold person being bombarded by planes.  However after reading the plaque to the side, I was impressed at the depth of the piece and questioning at the possible foreshadowing of the artist's sobering demise.

The above painting did not resonate with me in the least bit.  I find renaissance styled portraits to be far too self-centered and stiff to capture attention or inspire anything.

Personal Critique

Although this was one of my favorite projects to create, I wasn't completely happy with the end product.  If I remade this project, which is highly likely, I would do a bit more testing first and make sure my dancers know what kind of dance I was looking for and I may even make costumes.  And an actual person to record the videos.

My most successful project in my eyes is my reaction project.  I was proud that I could learn and incorporate photoshop into a piece and I adore how I was able to physically as well as intangibly change the piece. I also found that this piec depicts an inner versus outer reaction incredibly well, as well as showing feelings well.
